Today is National Read A Book Day…the idea is to seclude yourself in some comfy place with a great book to read…it’s been raining here all day…all the more reason and incentive to steal away and read! But, alas, I’ve been sorting through papers, trying to put some semblance of order into my daily life…and yes, the siren song of a good book* or two or three calls to me…
On Labor Day, I finished Ruth Ozeki’s A Tale for the Time Being. Excellent! I actually read it via my ears – narrated by the author – listening as I took my daily walks. A great traveling companion and I was sorry to have it end. I wound up ordering a print version because I do want to reread plus the author includes many cross references, footnotes, etc.
As Kathy and Laura will confirm, I am not a fiction reader…but I am slowly reacquainting myself with the genre. I especially like the audio book: I can listen as I am stitching or knitting or driving to quilt meetings – about a 45 min ride, one way, depending on the traffic. One of my words for 2017 is peace. I’m doing all that I can to make sure it exists in my life. I don’t listen to the radio in my car – haven’t since the day after the election…trying to remove as much negativity from my life as possible – which is especially hard since I live in the Nation’s capital! .
There are some perks living in Washington DC. – quiet as it’s kept. One is the National Book Festival, presented by the Library of Congress. It is free, features easily 50-60 authors for readers of all ages – even little ones in their parents’ arms or strollers. This year’s was this past Saturday and a great way to spend another very rainy day. I attended the conversation with Scott Turow; he talked about his newest thriller: Testimony, published in June. I’ve added it to my queue tho’ it’s going to be a while before I get to it. I started Louise Penny’s Inspector Gamache series – the 13th title was just published Aug 29! Everyone advises that the books be read in order – I’m only on # 3: The Cruelest Month – I imagine her 14th will be published by the time I finish the first twelve…but hey, I’m in no rush.
I would like to plop on the bed and read a chapter or two but I’ve a few more items on today’s task list to complete…Later though!
