He captured my attention with this question: “So why does normal eating start to slide into overeating? The simple answer: lack of fulfillment. You start overeating to make up for a lack somewhere else.”
“…countless people turn to overeating to substitute what they really want.” Here’s his list of common indicators:
“You don’t feel secure unless you are dulled by eating too much. Dullness brings a kind of calm that lasts a short while.”
“You don’t feel nurtured except when your taste buds are overstimulated with sugar, salt, and fat.”
“You don’t feel loved and appreciated, so you turn eating into ‘giving myself some love.'”
“Your life lacks meaning, but at least when you eat, the emptiness inside can be ignored for a little while.”
I have eaten for every one of those reasons for many years. Over the past year I have slid back into unhappy eating habits and have increased my weight by fifteen pounds. I stopped exercising. I worked at a job where I sat for hours. I was desperately unhappy. The cycle began: I ate even worse because I had gained weight back. Horror of horrors!
Here’s Deepak’s guiding principal of this book which resonated deeply:
“My goal is to bring you back to a state of fulfillment. Once that begins to happen, you will stop eating for the wrong reasons. The solution is simple but profound: To lose weight, every step of the way must be satisfying. You don’t have to psychoanalyze yourself; you can stop obsessing about your body and dwelling in disappointment and frustration. There is only one principle that applies: Life is about fulfillment. If your life isn’t fulfilled, your stomach can never supply what’s missing.”
Finally here’s our commitment:
“Your side: You agree to follow the mind body program outlined in the following pages for thirty days. You will not go on a diet. You will not indulge in negative judgements against your body. You will live in the present and disregard the old conditioning that has led only to frustration and disappointment. With an open mind, you will focus on walking the path of fulfillment.
My side: I agree to guide you to holistic change, giving you tested principles and action steps that have proven effective at the Chopra Center for years. Together, you and I are going to get your brain’s messages back into balance by giving you what you really want. Fulfillment must exist physically, emotionally, and mentally. You’ll know how to measure your success on each level:
Body: Your body will feel lighter, more energetic, and increasingly vital.
Emotion: Your mood will be happier, more uplifting, and increasingly positive.
Mind: Your decisions and choices will add to your vision of a better life and make the vision come true.”
I am ready and open to walking the path of fulfillment. Our virtual book-club meets on Tuesdays—I’ll keep you updated on my experience and my return to balance and love. ♥
