January 1st is my friend Margaret’s birthday…she was the “first baby” in the town where she was born, several decades ago.
She is also a big fan of the Rose Bowl Parade and especially likes to watch the HGTV show, that airs an hour before the official parade and shows behind-the-scenes peeks at building the floats.
This year, as last, I invited her over for a celebratory birthday brunch and of course, to watch the pre-parade show and parade…on our wide (63 inches) screen TV. So, at 10 AM sharp, we turned on the TV and guess what?! The show nor the parade were being televised! What?! We always watch the Rose Bowl Parade on New Year’s Day.
After frantically searching the web and calling DirecTV, I concluded that the parade and game were being broadcast today, 2 January 2012. Today, the parade announcers shared there is a law in Pasadena that forbids the parade and the game on a Sunday! Back in late 1890s, parade organizers were afraid the horses, tied up outside churches, would get spooked by the parade’s noise and interrupt church services.
She watched the parade today, tho’ not on the big screen tv. As for yesterday, we had a grand celebration and a great visit, despite our disappointment.
