Table #7

Table #7

2013 is the year! Finally! On Saturday, May 11th, my mother and I traveled to Indian Head to join Tammy at the Annual Mother/Daughter Tea at her church. I have been trying to get there for years. While our daughters weren’t there, we were able to make over Darren’s. My niece Niki is a walking hug; and the addition of her Vanna and friend, Paulette, made our table perfect. And at a neighboring table, my niece, Pam, and her Cheyenne, welcomed her sister and mother. The female energy in the room was so powerful. So, why did we allow men to run the world again?

The theme was Heirlooms & Lace

The theme was Heirlooms & Lace. This centerpiece is amazing.

I have always been so focused on the mother/daughter part of the gathering that I missed the fact that this was a TEA PARTY! Oh my…

...centerpiece magic...

Is anything better than mismatched teacups?

I’ve been obsessing a bit on the domestic arts lately. Maybe I knew I would see this table.

Mom and I zipped around town before the tea. This shot captures my childhood. I spent many hours on the Green…from firework displays to Halloween costume parades while in elementary school to quiet times sitting on the fountain (where did the rocks come from?) during a solitary bike ride…thanks for letting me drive up, Mom.

Next time, the adventure continues with the other women in my family!

Yep…I’m still here! While winding up activities started yesterday…which was not only National Scrapbook Day but also National Star Wars Day (May the 4th be with you!), I stopped and sat my posterior down to write! Finally! We chose TriVista as our blog title to emphasize the 3 characters, words, lives reflected here. As I read through what my Dear Friends have added over the last month and delight in their words and imagery, I regret that my view is missing. My apologies. After all, the triangle is one of our most esthetic yet strongest structures. So in typical random fashion…

Beautification Project

Beautification Project

These 2 bushes were all that remained alive at our entrance. Action was required. Kate, The Littles and Grammy headed to Lowe’s for new plantings! We spent a too-perfect Sunday digging, raking and giggling. I’ll add a picture as the area fills in.

Heartfelt gift from our Consortium family

A heartfelt gift from our Consortium family

Each year during April’s Autism Awareness Month, Autism Delaware and the Sussex Consortium offer a First Responders workshop focused on understanding/serving our folks and others with verbal communication/neurological differences. The 2013 session was in Jonathan’s memory; Jim + I were asked to provide the “human” side of the information. Well, Jim wasn’t quite “ready for Primetime,” as he said, so I put on my public speaking face and sallied forth. I spoke first. I did well…Jonny’s big smile behind me on the projection screen, hitting my points, mixing humor throughout. But to my surprise, as the day progressed, the autism experts kept referring to Jon’s experiences and deferring to me for comment. That old knot in the stomach came and went…tearing up only occasionally. Then as the day drew to an end, Pam Graves…who started out as Jon’s para when he was about 6 years old and ended as his teacher/transition coach for years 14-21…stepped forward and began to speak in a shaking voice. “You know, we lost Jonathan last year…”  She presented me with the gift above. Pam hopes to place it deep in the sand at the spot where Jim spread his ashes. The group had come together to literally solidify how much they loved Jonathan and love us. I was taken aback at first…despite its beauty, this felt like a grave marker. But, the signs are everywhere. Laura’s sky-reaching release of Mom, the Marina Day hat (epic) story and, of course, the timing. We are entering the rapids of our first year without Bubba. On May 7th, he was near death when he entered the hospital for the first time. We thank the heavens that we have Loved Ones in the raft, paddles at the ready. And, Jonny’s hand on our shoulders yet again.

This smile fills me up.

This smile fills me up.

Let me present Healthy Man! While this super-hero is sitting instead of digging the holes for our plantings, he is cancer-free and more himself than he has been in 2 years. Maybe longer. Surgical recovery was painful + demanding; it was particularly hard given Jim had never been through any of the hospital stay/home care scenario. But, slow and steady wins the race has been our life together and will continue to be. I’m just thrilled at the prospect of what our future holds…starting with a trip to Idaho in September where I will meet his NASBLA family after 16 years! Yee-ha.

In Early December Brin’s beau came to see Jeff to ask for her hand in marriage. Wow! Jeff explained to Jeremy that he really needed to come back and ask both of us. Double Wow!  And he did. (I was touched by both Jeremy & Jeff’s choices). We gave him our blessing and when I asked him why he had decided to ask her he said, Because she’s the one, Momma. He’s a true romantic but it was the perfect answer. He chose a beautiful engagement ring online and had it expressed. I helped him with a reservation at a local French restaurant, he wanted to ask her on their two year anniversary December 15th. The restaurant had never had a proposal in their establishment so they were excited to help. Jeremy wanted their waiter to deliver the ring in a glass of champagne right after he gave Brin her anniversary card and he’d get down on bended knee to ask her.

On December 14th the ring, which should have arrived days ago, had not been delivered. Jeremy called me to ask what he should do. (There was a touch of panic in his voice!) I went out on a limb and suggested a fun outrageous solution because they are a playful couple with highly developed sense of humor. I said get her a plastic ring something silly and crazy and make this a story your grandchildren will want to hear over and over!  And he did. He found a huge gaudy plastic diamond the size of a walnut and it gets better; a twist made it light up inside! Perfection.

He asked—she cried and said yes. She laughed through her tears at the ring!

real ring

The REAL ring finally arrived on Christmas Eve and on bended knee in the middle of us parents getting to know each other gathered in their kitchen—he asked her again. Isn’t young love gorgeous and inspiring? ♥(Pix of real ring coming soon!)

We love you Brin & Jeremy—happiness, bright blessings, and love, love, love ♥

We enjoyed Ben’s caroling at his pre-school last night. A half-dozen 3-year-olds jammin’ to Jingle Bells. So fun. And as so often happens, I flashed back to my own Littles and times passed. While rummaging through recently scanned photos, I found this shot of the Maynard Bumper Crop awaiting permission to dive into the stockings from Mammaw. From the left, we have First Grandchild Shannon. Luckily, she had us all for 4 years before Heather (1981), Jeffrey (1982), Catherine (1982), Katie (1982) were born. Mac (1985) is 14 months old and Josh (1986) is in my arms as I take the picture. Anything sweeter than the faces of children for the holiday? Yes, most have their own kids to pose now…and to hear the explanation of first, second and third cousins. *grin* It’s a Hill Thing.

So happy to say that my picture-taking has improved!

…Journal Your Christmas! Yay JYC! Thirty+ days of documenting the reclamation of our holiday from prep-joy to post-joy and peace (and recovery). Can she do it? Yes, she can! Of course, that’s what I said last year.  Solution? I just moved the front page for 2011 (which was just lovely – I’ll post a pic soon) to the back of the album and made room for pics from the Big Events of December 2011 to follow. Now while I await the creative nudge from Shimelle for the front page for 2012, I have papers/theme ready to go. I just need to find 1) a single embellishment to feature on each page through-out  and 2) “Christmasy” numbers from 1-31. There is that other problem, of course. What do I do about those absolutely must-have vintage Christmas papers showing up on Scrapbook.com for this season. They call to me. Help.

The JYC 2009 cover’s verso…a first…and last…attempt with ModgePodge. What was I thinking? I HATE to get my hands yucky.

I love the “fussiness” of my Christmas albums. I don’t embrace physical sparklies much in my regular life. But they seem to be my default setting for this annual album.

C is for common cold

A week ago Sunday I felt great; by Monday night I had a tickle in my throat. On Wednesday I had all of the common cold symptoms and was miserable. I am a whiny patient but thankfully my hubby is a patient caretaker. I survived with mega doses of hot tea and soup along with Season Two of The West Wing—to which I am now addicted!

These items soothed and saved me; body and mind.

Last May I visited my Aunt Margaret in Canada, she was selling her home in a retirement community and moving into an assisted living facility. There was only so much she could take with her and one of the things slated to be donated was a hope chest. I have a weak spot for boxes. I am prone to falling for all shapes and sizes, makes, materials, they call to me from the nooks and crannies of thrift shops and craft fairs. I currently only have one hope chest which is home to my childhood treasures, memories of a twenty-seven year marriage, and keepsakes from Brin’s journey from newborn to young woman. I am a devout keeper.

My Aunt told me the hope chest was the first and only gift her parents had given her—it was an engagement gift. She’d had it for over fifty years!  The chest was empty and a delectable cedar scent wafted from inside which still looked new—irresistible itself but it had family history!  But I was going home by plane. I couldn’t take it. No way. Fortunately, not only am I keeper but I’m a hoper.

After staying at my Aunt’s for a few days I was hosted by my dear friend Beatrice and her husband Joop in Oakville. I shared the story of the hope chest and asked if I could get it to her house could it hang out in the basement until I figured out how to get it to Florida. Bea’s a kindred soul and a hoper, too. She welcomed the dear chest and even helped me carry it downstairs when it was delivered by my Aunt’s pet sitter a few days later.  Do you see the synchronicities keeping the hope alive?

Once I was home I made a few inquiries for shipping but the cost was simply too high. Bea said it was fine where it was for a while and we would wait and see what the Universe sent us. Fast forward sixteen months when Bea spoke with friends who planned to visit south Florida in September and who had a brother and sister-in-law who would be driving from Canada to meet up with them. In a VAN. What fabulous friends that they agreed to this hopeful adventure!

Hope Chest Travel log leg one: September 9th left the basement of Bea & Joop’s Oakville house driven to Toronto. Thank you all for giving this hope wings.

“Oh. the places you’ll go” dear hope chest on your way from Toronto to Ocala!  How do you keep hope alive dear reader?

My attraction to boxes seems to be, what’s inside? What treasures or dreams?  Or what could I keep inside?!

Filled with HOPE…can’t you see it gushing out?
